Hi H!
I’m sorry to hear that you are experiencing the same symptoms. Since I posted this, I did more research on how to help manage my phobia and found great resources on YouTube. My favorite mantra lately has been “I am safe here”, and it doesn’t make anxiety go away immediately, but it places me in a better mental state so that I can process what’s scaring me. Remember that you are more than your fears!

I relate. I’m also 16 and its oddly comforting to find someone my age also dealing with sedatephobia. I feel like it’s so difficult to avoid silence at this age due to still being in school and having to deal with tests and exams so often.

I have these stomach issues in silence too!! They contribute massively to my fear; if my body remained silent in quiet rooms, I feel like I probably wouldn’t panic as much. It affects my grades and test scores, as I am only 16 and can’t focus in silent rooms at school :( Although we are two different people with drastically different roots for our trauma, this feels like the comment I relate to the most.

I believe it stems from a bad moment I had in 7th grade. It was silent, and my stomach made a noise, and then another, and another. All loud and embarrassing. My classmates bullied me for it, and now I fear silence all the time. At any given moment, who knows what noise my body could make?? I experience full-on panic attacks even knowing that I’ll have to sit in silence later on in the day. Tests feel like the end of the world to me. I shake, struggle to breathe, get nauseas to the point where I literally start gagging, and I just can’t focus at all. My scores and grades are plummeting because of it. Another effect of my sedatephobia is ocd. I’ve developed certain routines that must be done on testing days (quiet days), otherwise I will freak out 10x more. It’s embarrassing and makes me feel ashamed. I try to explain my fear to my friends and family, but it feels like none of them understands or takes me seriously. I just wish I could live a normal high school life, but I find myself panicking almost daily. I feel stuck in a loop of fear, and I don’t know what to do anymore. I don’t know if anyone reads these comments anymore, but it’s March 25th, 2026.

I can’t stand the feeling when my best friend mentions their other friends because I’m horrible at making friends. I cry when they don’t reply to my messages, scared they are going to leave me. I also have panic attacks a lot.
